Rectangular or round table? How to choose the right one for your dining room

When design adapts to your way of life

Choosing a dining table isn't just a matter of style, but also of space, circulation, and family habits . It's one of the most important pieces of furniture in the home: the daily meeting place, the setting for celebrations, and often also the place where we work, study, or have leisurely conversations.

Therefore, when choosing between a rectangular or round table , it is key to value much more than aesthetics.

Rectangular table: the most versatile

The rectangular table is the most common for a reason: it fits easily into elongated dining rooms and allows for very efficient space distribution. If you have a large family or frequently entertain guests, this can be your best option.

It also offers many size options, including extendable ones, and can be attached to a wall if space is limited.

Advantages:

  • It is very well used in rectangular or narrow spaces.

  • More seating capacity.

  • Allows different types of chairs, benches or combinations.

Round table: more closeness and fluidity

The great advantage of the round table is its ability to create closeness . Everyone sees each other face to face, there are no "heads," and the atmosphere is usually more relaxed.

It's ideal for more square spaces, open to the living room or integrated with other areas. However, you have to consider the diameter: a small round table is very practical, but if it grows too large, it can lose that sense of intimacy.

Advantages:

  • It fosters a more welcoming and social feeling.

  • Good circulation around it.

  • It is visually lighter and softer in small spaces.

What should you take into account when choosing?

  • Shape of the space : If your dining room is long, a rectangular one would probably fit best. If it's square, try a round one.

  • Usual number of people : think about whether you always eat with the same people or if you tend to increase your number at events.

  • General aesthetics : a round table softens lines, a rectangular one can reinforce a more sober or elegant style.

  • Functionality : Do you need it to be extendable? Does it sometimes have to be attached to the wall?

Our recommendation

Every home is unique, and so should every project. That's why we always recommend choosing your table based on how you experience your dining room , not just what "looks good" in a photo.

Sometimes, a round table with a central pedestal best fits a small space. Other times, an extendable rectangular table is the key for a large family that gathers often. Custom tables can also be designed to combine the best of both worlds.
